Gurgaon, a bustling city known for its dynamic growth and urban development, is set to embrace a revolutionary change in its traffic management system by Smart Traffic Light Upgrade. In a significant stride towards a smarter future, the state high-power purchasing committee has given the green light to a remarkable budget of Rs 12.71 crore for the installation of cutting-edge “smart traffic lights” at 91 key intersections. Additionally, the city will witness the addition of twenty more intelligent traffic lights, bringing the total count to a remarkable 111. This ambitious project, initially sanctioned in August 2021, encountered minor delays due to various factors. However, with the recent approval from the state high-power purchasing committee, these innovative signals are projected to be operational within a mere six months post the allocation of work orders.

A Digital Metamorphosis for Gurgaon’s Streets

Presently, Gurgaon boasts a network of 91 traffic signals, strategically dispersed across its landscape, with 29 located in Old Gurgaon and 62 in New Gurgaon. As part of this transformative initiative, traffic authorities have advocated for an additional 20 traffic signals at crucial junctions like Rajiv Chowk, IMT Chowk, MDI Chowk, IFFCO Chowk, Shankar Chowk, among others. A pivotal facet of this advancement lies in the complete replacement of existing traffic signals with state-of-the-art smart signals, marking a transition from conventional traffic management to an intelligent, adaptive system.

At the core of this innovation lies the concept of smart traffic lights, intricately connected to an internet-based vehicle traffic control framework. These advanced signals harness data from a constellation of sensors, edge devices, and video systems to dynamically adjust traffic light controls. Equipped with cutting-edge camera-detector technology, these intelligent signals possess the capability to fine-tune signal timings in response to the influx of vehicles at diverse intersections. Time of day and other variable factors also contribute to this dynamic adjustment, ensuring seamless traffic flow and a reduction in traffic violations.

A Glimpse into the Future

One of the most promising aspects of this transformation is the integration of smart traffic signals with a centralized control room. In real-time, this hub monitors live camera feeds, instantly detecting anomalies or violations without the need for physical presence at the scene. Pedestrian mobility is also prioritized within this upgrade, along with the creation of green corridors to facilitate the unobstructed movement of emergency vehicles. Moreover, this innovative system is poised to significantly reduce waiting times at intersections, ultimately leading to more efficient journeys for commuters.

Under this visionary project, strategically placed cameras, situated 100-150 meters ahead of junctions, act as vigilant observers of traffic volume. These cameras, in seamless communication with adjacent signals through sophisticated software, trigger signal adjustments based on real-time traffic density alerts. The result? A harmonized and responsive traffic management system that adapts organically to the city’s ever-changing rhythms.
